Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role:
This is your opportunity to become a VSA Volunteer to share your experience, skills and knowledge to serve and build capacity in the Solomon Islands by working alongside our partner organisation.
For this assignment we are looking for an experienced nurse, or someone with experience working in a hospital environment to help support Gizo Hospital. This assignment is set for between six to twelve months and will be based in Gizo.
For volunteers who are deployed the VSA will provide support by funding and organizing flights, visas, insurances, accommodation, living allowance and utilities for the duration of the deployment.
Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role:
If you are interested in this opportunity, here are some of the key skills and experiences that we’re looking for.
Gizo Hospital, based on Ghizo Island, serves as an essential healthcare hub for residents of Western Province. The hospital was established in the 1940s by missionaries and volunteers who worked on Gizo Island. The hospital is a referral centre for patients from the whole province.
Gizo hospital does not currently have a nursing education programme. Once nurses have been appointed the opportunities for them to learn and develop their skills in the departments they work in, and in other areas around the hospital, are limited. The hospital would like to ensure that nurses have professional development opportunities within the hospital environment so that they are able to learn on the job with available resources.
The Assignment:
A volunteer deployed on this assignment would be reporting directly to the head of the Nursing department and working closely with the Nursing Education Coordinator and the wider team to help provide support for training and development opportunities for Nursing staff in the Hospital. The key goal of this assignment is to support the establishment of a sustainable nursing education programme and a framework for professional development for nurses.
The Country – The Solomon Islands:
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.
A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security. VSA has established a strong presence in Solomon Islands through its ongoing partnerships with multiple in-country partners, including strong relationships with Solomon Islands Government.
