Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role:
This is your opportunity to become a VSA Volunteer to share your experience, skills and knowledge to serve and build capacity in the Solomon Islands by working alongside our partner organisation.
For this assignment we are looking for an experienced nurse, or someone with experience working in a hospital environment to help support Helena Goldie Hospital. This assignment is set for between six to twelve months and will be based in Munda.
For volunteers who are deployed the VSA will provide support by funding and organizing flights, visas, insurances, accommodation, living allowance and utilities for the duration of the deployment.
Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role
If you are interested in this opportunity, here are some of the key skills and experiences that we’re looking for.
Helena Goldie Hospital (HGH) was established in 1903 and is the second biggest hospital in Western Province. The 80-bed hospital was established by missionaries and started off as a small clinic in Munda. The hospital caters for the population in Munda & Noro Townships, Roviana Lagoon, Rendova & Tetepare Islands, East Vonavona Lagoon and Northwest New Georgia. The
population it serves is about 33,000 within the Western Province.
Helena Goldie Hospital does not currently have a nursing education program. After nurses start working, there aren’t many opportunities for them to learn new skills in their own departments or other areas of the hospital. The hospital wants to make sure nurses can keep growing and learning while they work.
The Assignment:
A volunteer deployed to this assignment would work with the team at Helena Goldie Hospital by supporting the development of nursing education programs. Key goals of the assignment would be supporting the training of nurses, sharing new skills, and helping to identify learning opportunities within the hospital.
This would give nurses more chances to grow and develop new skills, which supports the hospital’s goal of creating a professional development programme. In the long term, this could lead to higher quality care for patients and a stronger, more skilled nursing team at Helena Goldie Hospital.
The Country – The Solomon Islands:
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.
A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security. VSA has established a strong presence in Solomon Islands through its ongoing partnerships with multiple in-country partners, including strong relationships with Solomon Islands Government.
